Hospitals and healthcare facilities that focus on innovation are increasingly willing to invest not only in modern medical equipment, but also software and wearables for patients and employees. How do Apple devices help in healthcare and how does Jamf help to achieve their potential? I have decided to gather the latest information on modern mobile solutions and trends in the development of the global healthtech sector.

Mobile technologies in hospitals

90% of IT companies participating in the study conducted by the American company Vanson Bourne in the United States, Great Britain, France and the Netherlands admit that they have implemented or are planning to implement mobile technologies in healthcare. The improvement in patient care and the greater efficiency of medical teams is the aim here, and at the same time represents a benefit as well. The study confirmed that the use of mobile devices in medical facilities also directly affects patient satisfaction. Almost half (47%) of the medical institutions participating in the survey plan to use mobile technologies over the next two years. However, almost twice as many (75%) pointed to the lack of time and resources as an obstacle to implementation.

The use of such mobile devices is a global trend that is worth observing. MDM tools that allow for the efficient management of IT infrastructure in a company can be an answer to potential obstacles. But let’s start from the beginning. Why are hospitals around the world implementing mobile technologies and what are the benefits for patients and healthcare professionals?

“When you’re having fun and are distracted from your illness and pain, you recover faster” – says Roland Kramer of the University Medical Center (UMC), where Jamf, working together with CareServant, has carried out the implementation of personalized iPads for the youngest patients of the children’s hospital (Emma Children’s Hospital). What can offer better entertainment: a TV screen mounted in the patient’s room or one’s ‘own’ iPad customized to the children’s age group? The hospital in Amsterdam focused on the latter, achieving tangible results quickly in the form of the smiling faces of the youngest patients, and the doctors who are able to focus more on treating patients without being disturbed. Such implementations are not standard, but the example of this Dutch hospital may inspire medical centers around the world to implement mobile solutions and follow the latest trends in the healthcare sector.

Benefits for patients

Regardless of the country, hardly anyone wants to imagine a lengthy stay in hospital. However, we can imagine that the stay can be a little less stressful thanks to mobile devices that provide patients with entertainment in such modern medical facilities. A patient staying in one of these hospitals, using an iPhone, has access to their treatment plan, all planned activities and insight into their prescribed medications. Additionally, they get access to their daily schedule, and can choose meals or use various entertainment applications. Patients can increasingly contact facilities between hospital stays using applications on mobile devices. Transferring data on treatment and feedback from the patient is not only comfortable, it also relieves the burden on the facility itself, because it allows them to reduce the number of subsequent visits, e.g. for a follow-up consultation of test results.

Benefits for medical staff

Medical staff can provide the best care if they have intuitive, reliable tools at their disposal. Doctors who work in hospitals using these solutions can remotely connect with patients as well as conduct groundbreaking medical research. As a result, patient care becomes more effective, personalized and ultimately more patient-friendly. Using iPhones at medical facilities translates into greater employee efficiency and better communication in medical teams. It also allows for faster access to patient results from anywhere.

The equipment is personalized for a specific hospital or clinic each time. Once the patient leaves the hospital, all data from the device is automatically deleted. Thanks to this, another patient can use the iPhone or iPad as if it were a new device.

  • Better user experience

Using mobile devices in healthcare means a real increase in user satisfaction. As many as 96% of the organizations surveyed noticed an increase in patient satisfaction after the implementation of mobile solutions in medical facilities. Apple devices are synonymous with reliability, and when writing about user experience, the most commonly used terms are: legendary, amazing, and unique. In the case of Apple devices in selected hospitals that have chosen this brand, we are not talking about user experience, but rather patient experience. All settings of iOS devices are configured in such a way that the patient can easily use their equipment and that they are as user-friendly as possible.
